XBOW vs Manual Penetration Testing
In a manual application pentest, a skilled security tester assesses a scoped sample of your application, typically once or twice a year. XBOW is an autonomous offensive security platform that tests everything in the scope you set every time it changes, and proves each finding with a reproducible trace. Most teams run both these tests.

The Problem With the Annual Pentest
A good pentester is still the best single test of an application. However, there are not enough of them, they arrive once or twice a year, and the report describes the application as it was the week they tested it.
In between, new endpoints, APIs, and applications go live without testing. In addition, scheduling the next engagement can take weeks, and the report is typically a PDF someone has to turn into tickets. If you need a retest, that requires another engagement.

How They Compare
| Criteria | MANUAL PENTEST | |
|---|---|---|
| Cadence | Continuous. Every time the application changes | A scheduled engagement, annual or twice a year |
| Coverage | Everything in the scope you set, tested in parallel | A scoped sample, limited by tester days |
| Evidence | A complete, reproducible trace for every finding, confirmed by an independent validator | A report with findings and screenshots |
| Time to start | Runs start when you start them | Weeks from scoping to the first day of testing |
| Retest | The next run | A new engagement |
| Where findings go | Jira, Microsoft Sentinel, or your own tools through the API | A PDF |
| Reporting | Auditor-ready reporting that meets SOC 2 and ISO 27001 pentest requirements | The tester's report |
| Documentation | Public console guide, integrations guide and API reference | The statement of work |
| Identity and administration | SSO and SCIM on Enterprise | Not applicable |
| Where manual still wins | Give your testers the map and the proven chains, and they spend their days where judgment matters | Business logic that needs a conversation, physical and social engineering, red team objectives |
03
Why Most Teams Run Both
AI and human testers each play a role. For instance, XBOW covers the drift between engagements and gives the humans a head start: the testers go deep where the traces say to. In addition, some audits and customers ask for a named human pentest.

“These three months that we're not under pentests, there's so much change. This makes us feel better and sleep better at night, because we're actively testing it.”
